The County of Ceredigion (Electoral Changes) Order 2002

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

The Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales was required by section 64(1) of the Local Government Act 1972 (as substituted by the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994) to review electoral arrangements as soon as practicable after the first elections to unitary authorities in May 1995.

This Order gives effect to the proposals made in the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales' report of December 1999 for the County of Ceredigion.

Although the Order abolishes all existing electoral divisions within the County and replaces them with new electoral divisions, in practice the majority will remain the same.

There is no change to the divisions of Aberaeron, Aberporth, Beulah, Borth, Capel Dewi, Ceulanamaesmawr, Ciliau Aeron, Faenor, Lampeter, Llanarth, Llandyfriog, Llandysiliogogo, Llandysul Town, Llanfarian, Llanfihangel Ystrad, Llangeitho, Llangybi, Llanrhystyd, Llansantffraed, Llanwenog, Lledrod, Melindwr, New Quay, Penbryn, Penparc, Tirymynach, Trefeurig, Tregaron, Troedyraur, Ystwyth.

The following changes are made by this Order:

  • Aberystwyth is divided into five electoral divisions:

  • Aberystwyth Canol/Central consisting of the Central ward of the community of Aberystwyth, returning one councillor;

  • Aberystwyth Bronglais consisting of the East Ward of the community of Aberystwyth, returning one councillor;

  • Aberystwyth Gogledd/North consisting of the North ward of the community of Aberystwyth, returning one councillor.

  • Aberystwyth Rheidol consisting of the Riverside ward of the community of Aberystwyth, returning one councillor;

  • Aberystwyth Penparcau consisting of the South ward of the community of Aberystwyth, returning two councillors.

  • The existing division of Cardigan is divided into three new electoral divisions:

  • Aberteifi/Cardigan — Teifi consisting of the Teifi ward of the community of Cardigan;

  • Aberteifi/Cardigan — Rhyd-y-Fuwch, consisting of the Rhyd-y-Fuwch ward of the community of Cardigan; and

  • Aberteifi/Cardigan — Mwldan, consisting of the Mwldan ward of the community of Cardigan. Each new electoral division to be represented by one councillor.

  • The existing division of Llanbadarn Fawr is divided to create two electoral divisions named Llanbadarn Fawr Sulien and Llanbadarn Fawr Padarn — each returning one councillor.

The areas of the new divisions are demarcated on the detailed maps described in Article 2, prints of which may be inspected at all reasonable times at the offices of Ceredigion County Council and at the offices of the National Assembly for Wales, Cathays Park, Cardiff, CF10 3NQ (Local Government Modernisation Division).
