The Secretary of State for Transport, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 4(1) of the Dartford-Thurrock Crossing Act 19881, and of all other enabling powers, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation1

This Order may be cited as the Dartford-Thurrock Crossing Act 1988 (Appointed Day) Order 1988.

Appointed Day2

For the purposes of section 4(1) of the Dartford-Thurrock Crossing Act 1988 the date appointed by the Secretary of State is 31st July 1988.

This Order makes 31st July 1988 the appointed day for the purposes of section 4(1) of the Dartford-Thurrock Crossing Act 1988 (“the Act”). On that date, known in the Act as the transfer date, the highway through the Dartford Tunnels and the parts of the tunnel approaches which are not already trunk roads become trunk roads for the purposes of the Highways Act 1980 (c. 66).

As from the transfer date, tolls will be levied as respects vehicles using the Dartford Tunnels by Dartford River Crossing Limited, the person appointed under section 11 of the Act.

By virtue of section 47 of the Act, sections 23, 24, 27, 28 and 37 to 40 come into force on the transfer date. All provisions of the Act are then in force.
