PROBATION

The Combined Probation Areas (Bedfordshire) Order 1997

The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 2 of and paragraph 8 of Schedule 1 to the Probation Service Act 1993(1), and after the consultation required by section 2 thereof, hereby makes the following Order:

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Combined Probation Areas (Bedfordshire) Order 1997.

(2) This Order shall come into force on 30th November 1997 save that for the purpose of making appointments to the probation committee for the Bedfordshire Probation Area to take effect on that date, this Order shall come into force forthwith.

2.  For that part of Schedule 2 to the Combined Probation Areas Order 1986(2) that relates to the Bedfordshire Probation Area(3) there should be substituted the following:

3.  The probation committee for Bedfordshire shall co-opt one member of Bedfordshire County Council and one member of Luton Borough Council, being the responsible authorities for the area(4).

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order amends the Combined Probation Areas Order 1986 (S.I. 1986/1713), so as to reduce the number of justices on the committee for the Bedfordshire Area from 14 to 8. The petty sessional divisions of Ampthill and Leighton Buzzard were formerly represented by 1 justice each. The petty sessional divisions of Biggleswade and Dunstable were represented by 2 justices and those of Bedford and Luton by 4 justices each.

The Order also provides (pursuant to paragraph 8 of Schedule 1 to the 1993 Act), for the co-option of a member from each of Bedfordshire County and Luton Borough Councils to the committee.
