The Financial Assistance for Environmental Purposes Order 2006

The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred upon her by section 153(4) of the Environmental Protection Act 19901, makes the following Order:

Citation, extent and commencement1

This Order—

a

may be cited as the Financial Assistance for Environmental Purposes Order 2006;

b

extends to England and Wales and Northern Ireland, except for Article 2(b) which extends to England and Wales; and

c

comes into force on 31st July 2006.

Variation of section 153(1) of the Environmental Protection Act 19902

In section 153(1) of the Environmental Protection Act 19902 (purposes for which financial assistance may be given), after paragraph (vv)3

a

insert—

the scheme known as the World Summit on Sustainable Development Implementation Fund;

b

insert—

the programme known as the Envirowise Programme, in relation to its activities in England.

This Order varies section 153(1) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. It enables the Secretary of State, with the consent of the Treasury, to give financial assistance to, or for the purposes, of the World Summit on Sustainable Development Implementation Fund (the WIF) and to, or for the purposes of, the Envirowise Programme in relation to its activities in England. This Order extends to England and Wales and Northern Ireland, except for Article 2(b) which extends to England and Wales.

The purpose of the WIF is to provide funds to accelerate implementation of commitments made at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). The funds provided for this purpose may be applied to initiatives such as sustainable development dialogues, the use and promotion of multi-stakeholder partnerships and initiatives to support WSSD commitments on which Defra leads. Details of the Scheme are available on the Government Sustainable Development website at http://www.sustainable-development.gov.uk.

The purpose of the Envirowise Programme is to provide business with free, independent, confidential advice and support on practical ways to improve profits, minimise waste, be more resource efficient and reduce their environmental impact. Details of the Programme are available on the Envirowise website at http://www.envirowise.gov.uk.

A Regulatory Impact Assessment has not been prepared for this instrument as it has no impact on business, charities or voluntary bodies.
