The Registration (Land and Deeds) (Northern Ireland) Order 1992

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order amends the Land Registration Act (Northern Ireland) 1970 by, principally,—

(1) abolishing different classes of register in the Land Registry in favour of a single title register;

(2) abolishing the Land Registry Insurance Fund and providing for disputes about compensation to be determined by the Lands Tribunal;

(3) expediting and simplifying registration procedures; and

(4) facilitating the computerization of records and searches.

The Order also amends the Registration of Deeds Act (Northern Ireland) 1970 by—

(a)simplifying proceedings in the registry of deeds;

(b)facilitating computerization; and

(c)enabling provision to be made for telephone applications for searches and for the lodging of documents by post.
