In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by sections 3(a) and 4 of the Education Act 1962(1), the Secretary of State for Education and Science and (in respect of persons ordinarily resident in Wales(2)) the Secretary of State for Wales hereby make the following Regulations:

1.  These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 1987 and shall come into force on 1st September 1987.

2.  For item (c) in regulation 3 of the Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) Regulations 1986(3) (“the principal Regulations”) there shall be substituted the following —

(c)technology, or

(d)craft, design and technology..

3.  For regulation 5 of the principal Regulations there shall be substituted the following regulation —

5.  A training bursary shall neither be paid to a person nor be tenable by him except in respect of a course which —

(a)is provided by an establishment in England or Wales named by the Secretary of State when granting the training bursary;

(b)begins on or after 1st September 1986;

(c)is designed to prepare persons to teach pupils either aged 11 to 16 or of all ages in secondary schools and of which the principal subject-matter is —

(i)mathematics, or

(ii)physics, or

(iii)technology, or

(iv)physics and technology, or

(v)craft, design and technology; and

(d)is such that the period which the person in question would require for its completion (excluding any period for which he is excused attendance) would ordinarily not exceed two academic years..

4.  For paragraph 1 of regulation 7 of the principal Regulations there shall be substituted the following —

(1) a training bursary shall —

(a)save as provided in sub-paragraph (b) below, be payable at the rate of £1,200 per annum in respect of any academic year which began before the 1st September 1987;

(b)in the case of the part-time course in mathematics leading to the Post-graduate Certificate of Education provided by Thames Polytechnic and beginning in January 1987 be £600 for the period 27th April 1987 to 31st December 1987 and subsequently at the rate described in sub-paragraph (c) below; and

(c)in any other case be payable at the rate of £1,250 per annum, the amount payable in respect of a part-time course being calculated pro rata..

5.  The Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) (Amendment) Regulations 1987(4) are hereby revoked.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations amend the Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) Regulations 1986 which (as now amended by the addition of references to technology) authorise the Secretary of State to pay grants to persons undergoing training to prepare them to teach mathematics, physics, technology, or craft, design and technology. Bursaries are now tenable in respect of a course designed to prepare persons to teach pupils aged 11-16 or of all ages in secondary schools, the principal subject-matter of which is mathematics, physics, technology, physics and technology or craft design and technology. Grants are now payable whether the course is full-time or part-time.

The rate of grant is increased to £1,250 per annum in respect of an academic year beginning on or after 1st September 1987, the amount payable in respect of a part-time course being calculated pro rata.

The Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) (Amendment) Regulations 1987 are revoked.
