The Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) (Amendment) Regulations 1989

In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by sections 50 and 63 of the Education (No 2) Act 1986(), the Secretary of State for Education and Science as respects England, and the Secretary of State for Wales as respects Wales, hereby make the following Regulations:
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) (Amendment) Regulations 1989 and shall come into force on 1st September 1989.
2. The Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) Regulations 1988() shall be amended as follows:–
(a)in regulation 2 –
(i)in the definition of “course of initial teacher training” for the words “paragraph 2(a) or 2(b)(i) of schedule 5 to the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1982” there shall be substituted the words “paragraph 2(2)(a)(iii) of schedule 5 to the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1989()”;
(ii)in the definition of “qualified teacher” for the words “means a person who, in pursuance of the Regulations relating to the employment of teachers made under section 27 of the Education Act 1980, is qualified to be employed as a teacher at a school to which that section applies” there shall be substituted “is a qualified teacher under Schedule 5 to the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1989”;
(b)in regulation 5 –
(i)at the end of paragraph (b) there shall be added the words – “or, in the case of a course of which the principal subject matter is chemistry, on or after 1st September 1989;”;
(ii)in paragraph (c) there shall be substituted for the word “and” after item (v) the word “or”; and there shall be added after item (v) the words – “(vi) chemistry; and”

Explanatory Note
These Regulations amend the Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) Regulations 1988 to empower the Secretary of State to pay training bursaries in respect of courses of initial teacher training which begin on or after 1st September 1989 and of which the principal subject matter is chemistry. The Regulations also substitute for references to the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1982 references to the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1989, which come into force on 1st September 1989.
