(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order revokes the Medicines (Committee on Dental and Surgical Materials) Order 1975 (which established the Committee on Dental and Surgical Materials) and the Medicines (Committee on Dental and Surgical Materials) Amendment Order 1979 (which amended it). This Order abolishes that Committee, the purposes of which were—
(a)to advise in relation to substances or articles (including instruments, apparatuses or appliances) for dental or surgical use to which any provision of the Medicines Act 1968 (“the Act”) applies,
(b)to advise in relation to substances and fluids for use with contact lenses or blanks, and
(c)to promote the collection and investigation of information about adverse reactions to enable the advice to be given.
In connection with the implementation of Council Directive 93/42/EEC (OJ L169, 12.7.93, p.1) concerning medical devices, most of the substances and articles referred to above will no longer be covered by provisions of the Act. In the case of those remaining so subject, the statutory functions of the Committee on Dental and Surgical Materials under the Act fall to another committee established under section 4 or to the Medicines Commission (section 2).
