(1)For each police area, other than the metropolitan police district, the Secretary of State F1... must by order designate a local authority.
(2)In this Chapter, the “appropriate officer”, [F2means—
(a)in relation to a police area in England, the head of paid service of the local authority designated for that police area;
(b)in relation to a police area in Wales, the chief executive of the local authority designated for that police area.]
(3)In this section—
[F3“chief executive” means the person appointed by a county council or county borough council in Wales under section 54 of the Local Government and Elections (Wales) Act 2021;]
“local authority” means—
a district council,
a county council in England for a county in which there are no district councils,
the Council of the Isles of Scilly,
a county council or county borough council in Wales;
“head of paid service”, in relation to a council [F4in England], means the person designated by the council under section 4(1)(a) of the Local Government Act 1989.
