1.—(1) These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) Regulations 1994 and shall come into force on 22nd August 1994.
(2) In these Regulations:—
“course of initial teacher training” means a course for the initial training of teachers in schools which has been approved by the Secretary of State under paragraph 2(1)(c) of Schedule 3 to the Teachers Regulations;
“full-time course” means a course which does not involve less than 700 hours of instruction a year (including any teaching practice which forms part of the course) and “part-time course” means a course involving less than 700 hours of such instruction;
“grant-maintained school” has the meaning assigned to it by sections 22(1) and 221(4) of the Education Act 1993(1);
“grant-maintained special school” has the meaning assigned to it by sections 182(3) and 187(3)(b) of the Education Act 1993;
“holder” means a person in receipt of a training bursary;
“middle school” means a school in respect of which proposals have been implemented, being proposals such as are mentioned in section 1(1) of the Education Act 1964(2);
“qualified teacher” means a qualified teacher under Schedule 3 to the Teachers Regulations;
“Teachers Regulations” means the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1993(3); and
“training bursary” means a grant made in pursuance of these Regulations to a person undergoing training as a teacher.
(3) In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires, any reference to a numbered regulation is a reference to the regulation bearing that number in these Regulations, any reference to a numbered paragraph is a reference to the paragraph of that regulation bearing that number, any reference in a paragraph to a sub-paragraph is a reference to a sub-paragraph of that paragraph and any reference to a Schedule, is to the Schedule to these Regulations.
(4) The following Regulations are hereby revoked—
The Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) Regulations 1988(4);
The Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) (Amendment) Regulations 1989(5);
The Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) (Amendment) Regulations 1990(6);
The Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) (Amendment) Regulations 1991(7);
The Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 1991(8); and
The Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) (Amendment) Regulations 1993(9).
