2. Section 57 of the Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000(1) (testing persons in police detention) shall come into force on 20th May 2002 within the following police areas(2) only:
(i)Bedfordshire;
(ii)Devon and Cornwall;
(iii)Lancashire;
(iv)Merseyside;
(v)South Yorkshire; and
(vi)North Wales.
Section 57 has already been commenced in respect of the police areas of Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and the metropolitan police district, by virtue of S.I. 2001/2232.
The term “police area” has the meaning ascribed to it in section 101 of the Police Act 1996 (c. 16) by virtue of Schedule 1 to the Interpretation Act 1978 (c. 30).
