53Extension of maximum period of deferment of sentence

Article 3 of the Criminal Justice (Northern Ireland) Order 1996 (NI 24) (deferment of sentence) is amended as follows.

In paragraph (2)
(deferment not to exceed 6 months) for “6 months” substitute “
the relevant period
”
.

After paragraph (2) insert—

In paragraph (2) “the relevant period” means—
a
if the court makes an order under Article 28(1) of the Road Traffic Offenders (Northern Ireland) Order 1996 in respect of the offender, 6 months;
b
in any other case, 12 months.
