Weights and Measures (Metrication Amendments) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2002

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, in exercise of the powers conferred by Article 13(1) of the Weights and Measures (Northern Ireland) Order 1981(1) and now vested in it(2) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Regulations:—

Citation and commencement

1.  These Regulations may be cited as the Weights and Measures (Metrication Amendments) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2002 and shall come into operation on 8th April 2002.

Amendments of Regulations

2.—(1) On the coming into operation of these Regulations, the Regulations specified in the Schedule shall be amended in the manner specified as follows.

(2) In respect of each of the Regulations listed in the Schedule, after the words “supplementary indication” or “supplementary indications” where those words appear for the first time in each of the regulations specified, there shall be inserted the words “until 31st December 2009”.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations.)

These Regulations implement in part the amendments made by Directive 1999/103/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council (O.J. No. L34, 9.2.2000, p. 17) to Council Directive 80/181/EEC (O.J. No. L39, 15.2.80, p. 40) which relates to the use of units of measurement for economic, public health, public safety or administrative purposes so as to permit the use of non-metric units of measurement as “supplementary indications” until 31st December 2009.

The Regulations amend those Regulations made under the Weights and Measures (Northern Ireland) Order 1981 on weighing and measuring equipment in use for trade as are specified in the Schedule by inserting the date of 31st December 2009 as the final date for the use of such supplementary indications.
