RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

These Regulations implement Articles 48 and 53 of Council Directive 96/29/Euratom (O.J. No. L159, 29.6.96, p.1) laying down basic safety standards for the protection of the health of workers and the general public against the dangers arising from ionising radiation.

The Department of the Environment being a department designated1 for the purposes of section 2(2) of the European Communities Act 19722 makes the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred on it by that section in relation to the safety measures regarding radioactive substances and the emission of ionising radiation.
