EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations amend the Meat Products Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004 (S.R. 2004 No. 13, as amended).

In implementation of Council Directive 77/99/EEC on health problems affecting the production and marketing of meat products and certain other products of animal origin (the text of which was replaced by the text annexed to Council Directive 92/5/EEC, OJ No. L57, 2.3.92, p.l), a provision was included in the Meat Products Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004 to the effect that where meat products of a specified appearance are sold, for the purposes of the Food Labelling Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1996 (S.R. 1996 No. 383, as amended) the name used as the name of the food in the labelling of the products must include an indication of any starch or protein added other than for a technological purpose only. Following the repeal of Council Directive 77/99/EEC, these Regulations remove that requirement (regulation 2).
