16 Interpretation.

In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires, the following expressions have the meanings hereby assigned to them respectively, that is to say—

  • F1the 2016 Act” means the Higher Education Governance (Scotland) Act 2016;

  • the Act of 1858” means the M1Universities (Scotland) Act 1858;

  • the Act of 1868” means the Representation of the M2People (Scotland) Act 1868;

  • the Act of 1889” means the M3Universities (Scotland) Act 1889;

  • the Act of 1932” means the M4Universities (Scotland) Act 1932;

  • the Act of 1953” means the M5University of St. Andrews Act 1953;

  • the appointed day” means the day appointed by Her Majesty by Order in Council as mentioned in section 13 of this Act;

  • the older Universities” means the Universities of St. Andrews, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh;

  • functions” includes powers and duties;

and other expressions shall have the like meaning as in the Universities (Scotland) Acts 1858 to 1932.

Except where the context otherwise requires, any reference in this Act to any enactment shall be construed as a reference to that enactment as amended, extended or applied by, or by virtue of, any subsequent enactment including this Act.
