In section 6 of the M1 Caravan Sites Act 1968 in subsection (1) (duty of local authorities to provide sites for gipsies) the words “county borough” shall be omitted and in subsection (2) of that section (modifications in relation to county boroughs and London boroughs), for the words “county borough” in the first place where they occur, there shall be substituted the words “ metropolitan county ” and after the words “at a time” there shall be inserted the words “ in each district in the county or, as the case may be, in the London borough ”F1. . .

On an application made before 1st April 1974 by the council of an existing county or county borough, the Secretary of State may, by an order made under and in accordance with section 12 of the M2Caravan Sites Act 1968, designate as an area to which section 10 of that Act applies so much of a new county as comprises the whole or any part of the existing county or county borough.
