85 General interpretation.

In this Act—
“the M11953 Act” means the Post Office Act 1953;
“the M21969 Act” means the Post Office Act 1969;
“the appointed day” has the meaning given by section 1(2);
“the Corporation” means British Telecommunications;

“pension” includes allowance and gratuity;
“statutory maximum”, in relation to a fine on summary conviction, means—

in Scotland, the prescribed sum within the meaning of section 289B of the M4Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1975 (£1,000 at the passing of this Act);

in Northern Ireland, the prescribed sum within the meaning of Article 4 of the Fines and Penalties (Northern Ireland) Order 1984;
and for the purposes of the application of this definition in . . . F4 the Isle of Man the provisions of the said Act of 1980 which relate to the sum mentioned in paragraph (a) shall extend to . . . F4 the Isle of Man;
“statutory provision”, except in relation to Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man, has the same meaning as in section 57(1) of the M5Harbours Act 1964, in relation to Northern Ireland, has the same meaning as in section 1(f) of the M6Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954 and, in relation to the Isle of Man, means an Act of Tynwald.

Any reference in this Act to a subsidiary or wholly-owned subsidiary shall be construed in accordance with section 736 of the Companies Act 1985.

This section shall extend to the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.
