In any proceedings the contents of a document may (whether or not the document is still in existence) be proved by the production of an enlargement of a microfilm copy of that document or of the material part of it, authenticated in such manner as the court may approve.
[F4Where the proceedings concerned are proceedings before a magistrates’ court inquiring into an offence as examining justices this section shall have effect with the omission of the words “authenticated in such manner as the court may approve.”]

(1)In this Part of this Act—
[F5“copy”, in relation to a document, means anything onto which information recorded in the document has been copied, by whatever means and whether directly or indirectly, and “statement” means any representation of fact, however made; and]
“proceedings” means criminal proceedings, including—
(a)proceedings in the United Kingdom or elsewhere before a court-martial constituted under the M1Army Act 1955 [F6, the M2Air Force Act 1955 or the Naval Discipline Act 1957];
(b)proceedings in the United Kingdom or elsewhere before the Courts-Martial Appeal Court—
(i)on an appeal from a court-martial so constituted F7. . .; or
(ii)on a reference under section 34 of the M3Courts-Martial (Appeals) Act 1968; and
(c)proceedings before a Standing Civilian Court.
(2)Nothing in this Part of this Act shall prejudice any power of a court to exclude evidence (whether by preventing questions from being put or otherwise) at its discretion.
