1Prohibition of female circumcision.

Subject to section 2 below, it shall be an offence for any person—
a
to excise, infibulate or otherwise mutilate the whole or any part of the labia majora or labia minora or clitoris of another person; or
b
to aid, abet, counsel or procure the performance by another person of any of those acts on that other person's own body.

A person guilty of an offence under this section shall be liable—
a
on conviction on indictment, to a fine or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or to both; or
b
on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum (as defined in section 74 of the [1982 c. 48.] Criminal Justice Act 1982) or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or to both.
