In section 33(1) of the Immigration Act 1971 (interpretation) at the appropriate place insert—

  • “justice of the peace”, in relation to Northern Ireland, means lay magistrate;

In section 167(1) of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 (interpretation) at the appropriate place insert—

  • “justice of the peace”, in relation to Northern Ireland, means lay magistrate;

In section 45 of the UK Borders Act 2007 (search for evidence of nationality: other premises), after subsection (5) insert—

In the application of this section to Northern Ireland a reference to a justice of the peace is to be treated as a reference to a lay magistrate.
