The Church Representation Rules (Amendment) (No. 2) Resolution 1984

Qualifications of Persons to be chosen or elected by Annual Meetings

1.  After rule 9(1) there shall be inserted—

   

(1A) Notwithstanding paragraph (1) hereof, a baptised person who—

(a)is of communicant status in another Church which subscribes to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity; and

(b)is in good standing in that Church; and

(c)is an habitual worshipper and a communicant at the parish church or at some other building licensed for public worship in the parish; and

(d)is of seventeen years and upwards,

may, with the prior permission of the bishop, be nominated for election as a parochial representative of the laity to the parochial church council.

Provided that at least two-thirds of the parochial representatives of the laity to the parochial church council shall have the qualifications set out in paragraph (1) hereof.

   

Citation, interpretation and commencement

2.—(1) This resolution may be cited as the Church Representation Rules (Amendment) (No. 2) Resolution 1984, and the Church Representation Rules (Amendment) Resolutions 1973 to 1981 and this Resolution may be cited together as the Church Representation Rules (Amendment) Resolutions 1973 to 1984.

(2) Any reference in this Resolution to a numbered rule or Appendix is a reference to the rule or Appendix, as the case may be, bearing that number in the Church Representation Rules, as amended by the Church Representation Rules (Amendment) Resolutions 1973 to 1981 and by the Diocese in Europe Measure 1980.

(3) This Resolution shall come into operation on the first day of January 1985.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This Resolution of the General Synod of the Church of England, which was passed in accordance with section 7(1) of the Synodical Government Measure 1969, amends the Church Representation Rules contained in Schedule 3 to that Measure. Rule 9 of those Rules is amended to make it possible for a baptised person of another Church not in communion with the Church of England to stand for election to the parochial church council with the prior permission of the bishop.
