The Schools General (Scotland) Amendment Regulations 1987

The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 2 of the Education (Scotland) Act 1980(1) and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Regulations:

Citation and commencement

1.  These Regulations may be cited as the Schools General (Scotland) Amendment Regulations 1987 and shall come into force on 1st April 1987.

Amendment of the principal regulations

2.  For regulation 5 of the Schools General (Scotland) Regulations 1975(2) there shall be substituted the following regulation:–

Minimum number of school days

5.  An education authority shall, except where prevented by circumstances outwiththeir control, secure that every school under their management shall be open for at least–

(a)198 school days (excluding Saturdays and Sundays) in the school year which ends on 31st July 1987; and

(b)190 school days (excluding Saturdays and Sundays) in each subsequent school year.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations reduce from 200 to 198 days the minimum number of school days that an education authority school in Scotland must be open during the school year 1986/1987. They further reduce to 190 the minimum number of school days that such a school must be open during 1987/1988 and subsequent school years. A school year runs from 1st August in one year to 31st July in the next.
