(This note is not part of the Regulations)
These Regulations amend the Merchant Shipping (Medical Stores) Regulations 1986, which require ships to carry the appropriate medical stores.
The amendments are—
(a)the introduction of a new Scale, IIA, which slightly relaxes the requirements for ships carrying less than 9 persons when on longer voyages within the Limited European Area and the Baltic Sea;
(b)the definition of smaller ships trading between the British Isles and the continent of Europe between the River Elbe and Brest as those carrying less than 9 persons (rather than as ships of 350 grt or 350 kw registered power);
(c)the updating of the references to Merchant Shipping Notice No. 1200 (which specifies the medical stores);
(d)the substitution of a reference to the IMO Medical First Aid Guide for the reference to the Chemicals Supplement to the Ship Captain’s Medical Guide.
International Maritime Organization publication may be obtained from IMO, 4 Albert Embankment, London SE1 7SR.
