The Legal Aid Act 1988 (Commencement No. 1) Order 1988

The Lord Chancellor, in exercise of the power conferred on him by section 47(2) of the Legal Aid Act 19881, hereby makes the following Order:—

This Order may be cited as the Legal Aid Act 1988 (Commencement No. 1) Order 1988.

The following provisions of the Legal Aid Act 1988 shall come into force on 20th August 1988:—

  • Section 3(1), (5), (6), (7), (8), (9) and (10),

  • Schedule 1,

  • Schedule 7, paragraphs 6, 7 and 8.

This Order brings into force certain provisions of the Legal Aid Act 1988 relating to the Legal Aid Board. Section 3(1), (5), (6), (7), (8), (9) and (10), together with Schedule 1, paragraph 1, establish the Board as a body corporate and provide for the appointment of members. Schedule 1 makes further provision concerning membership and enables the Board to appoint staff and to regulate its own proceedings. Schedule 7, paragraphs 6, 7 and 8 provide for offers of employment to be made by the Board to certain employees of the Law Society.
