The Urban Development Corporations (Appropriate Ministers) Order 1988

The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 170(3)(b) of the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980(1) and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement

1.  This Order may be cited as the Urban Development Corporations (Appropriate Ministers) Order 1988 and shall come into force on 9th June 1988.

Meanings of “the appropriate Minister”

2.  In Part XVI of the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980 “the appropriate Minister” means —

(a)in relation to the British Coal Corporation or any wholly-owned subsidiary of the British Coal Corporation, the Secretary of State for Energy; and

(b)in relation to British Shipbuilders and the British Steel Corporation or any wholly-owned subsidiary of either of them, the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry

and any reference to the Secretary of State and the appropriate Minister, in relation to those bodies, is a reference to the Secretary of State for the Environment and the Secretary of State mentioned in sub-paragraph (a) or (b), as appropriate.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order provides that for the purposes of Part XVI of the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980, which relates to urban development, the Secretary of State for Energy shall be the appropriate Minister for the British Coal Corporation and its wholly-owned subsidiaries and the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry shall be the appropriate Minister for British Shipbuilders and the British Steel Corporation and their wholly-owned subsidiaries.
