Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order confers powers upon and varies existing statutory provisions relating to the Guardians of the Standard of Wrought Plate in Birmingham (“the Company”) in a variety of matters, the principal of which are–

(a)the alteration of the constitution of the Company (article 3) and its Wardens' Committee (article 6) as responsible for the general management of the assay office of the Company;

(b)the appointment of officers and employees (article 7), acquisition and disposal of land (article 8), accounts and audit (article 10) and borrowing and investment (articles 11 and 12);

(c)pensions for employees (article 13), gifts of historical etc articles in certain circumstances (article 14) and enabling offices to be provided elsewhere than in Birmingham (article 15).

The Order also provides for the amendment or repeal of certain provisions of the Birmingham Assay Office Acts 1824 and 1902.
