This Order brings into force on 1st January 1995 further provisions of the Merchant Shipping (Salvage and Pollution) Act 1994.
In particular it brings into force provisions giving the Salvage Convention, 1989, the force of law in the United Kingdom together with consequential provisions. (The Convention, although ratified by the United Kingdom, is not yet in force internation– ally). The Order also makes possible the implementation of the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co–operation, 1990, and of provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982, relating to the protection and preservation of the marine environment from pollution by ships.
