(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations, which apply in Great Britain, amend the European Parliamentary Elections Regulations 1986.

The amendment made by regulation 2 applies for the purposes of European Parliamentary elections (in England and Wales) the amendment made by Schedule 19 to the Education Act 1993 to add grant–maintained schools to the schools to which rule 22 of the parliamentary elections rules in Schedule 1 to the Representation of the People Act 1983 applies. That rule enables the returning officer to use rooms in the premises to which it applies for the purpose of taking the poll at an election.

Regulation 3 increases the maximum amount of a candidate’s election expenses at a European Parliamentary election. The maximum amount of a candidate’s election expenses is made up of a fixed sum (expressed in pounds) plus a sum expressed in pence (and fractions of pence) for each entry in the register of electors. Regulation 4 omits the provision by which that maximum amount was last increased.
