Under Section 63 of the Environment Act 1995 the Secretary of State may by order establish for a National Park an authority (known as a National Park authority) to carry out in relation to that Park the functions conferred on such an authority by or under Part III of that Act. A National Park authority is a body corporate (see Schedule 7 paragraph 1(1) to that Act of 1995).

Membership of National Park authorities6

Each National Park authority shall consist of the number of local authority members and of Secretary of State members specified for that authority in Part I of Schedule 2 to this Order.

The number of local authority members to be appointed to a National Park authority by the council for a principal area shall be the number specified for that council in relation to the relevant National Park authority in Part II of Schedule 2 to this Order.

In respect of a National Park authority specified in Part III of Schedule 2 the council or councils identified opposite the name of that National Park authority are excluded from the councils by whom local authority members of that National Park authority are to be appointed.
