The Borough of Trafford (Eastern Spine Canal Bridge) Scheme 1993 Confirmation Instrument 1995

The Secretary of State for Transport makes this Instrument in exercise of his powers conferred by sections 106(3) and 108 of the Highways Act 1980(1), and now vested in him(2), and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf:—

1.  The Borough of Trafford (Eastern Spine Canal Bridge) Scheme 1993 is hereby confirmed.

2.  The said Scheme as confirmed (hereinafter referred to as “the Scheme”) is set out in the Schedule hereto, and copies of the scheme with its accompanying plans are deposited at the offices of the Department of Transport, 43 Marsham Street, London SW1P 3PY and at the offices of Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council, Town Hall, Talbot Road, Stretford, Greater Manchester M32 0YT.

3.  The Scheme will become operative on the date on which notice that it has been confirmed is first published in accordance with paragraph 1 of Schedule 2 to the Highways Act 1980.

4.  This instrument may be cited as the Borough of Trafford (Eastern Spine Canal Bridge) Scheme 1993 Confirmation Instrument 1995.

SCHEDULE TO THE ORDERTHE BOROUGH OF TRAFFORD (EASTERN SPINE CANAL BRIDGE) SCHEME 1993

Trafford Borough Council (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) make this Scheme in exercise of their powers under Section 106(3) and 108 of the Highways Act 1980 and of all other enabling powers:—

1.  The Council are authorised to construct over the navigable waters of the Bridgewater Canal the bridge specified in the Schedule to this Scheme as part of the highway which they are proposing to construct (known as the Eastern Spine) as part of the improvements to the A5081 Trafford Park Road/Bridgewater Boulevard in the area of Stretford and Old Trafford in the said Borough of Trafford.

2.  The Council are also authorised in connection with the construction of the said bridge to divert by reduction of the width that part of the navigable watercourse specified in the said Schedule in the manner specified in that Schedule.

3.  This Scheme may be cited as “The Borough of Trafford (Eastern Spine Canal Bridge) Scheme 1993”.

SCHEDULEEASTERN SPINE CANAL BRIDGE — OVER BRIDGEWATER CANAL WITH KEY PLAN (PLAN “A”) SITE PLAN (PLAN “B”) AND SECTION (PLAN “C”) ATTACHED PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE BRIDGE CROSSING THE BRIDGEWATER CANAL AS PART OF THE IMPROVEMENTS TO THE A5081 TRAFFORD PARK ROAD/BRIDGEWATER BOULEVARD.

POINTS OF COMMENCEMENT AND TERMINATION (see Plan “B”)

From a point north of the centreline of the Bridgewater Canal in the Borough of Trafford, 20 metres south east of the south western corner of Unit no.7 Warwick Place Trading Estate and 31 metres west south west of the south western corner of Pinnacle Storage Ltd.To a point south of the centreline of the Bridgewater Canal, 41 metres south east of the south western corner of Unit No.7 Warwick Place Trading Estate and 17 metres south west of the south western corner of Pinnacle Storage Ltd.

CONSTRUCTION

Steel I beams on brick faced concrete abutments.

SPAN

14.7 metres (approximately) clear span square to the centreline of the Bridgewater Canal.33.6 metres (approximately) skew length between abutments.

WIDTH

The overall width of 33.4 metres (approximately) accommodates a dual carriageway road, comprising a 7.3 metre carriageway (2 × 3.65 metre lanes) in the eastbound direction, a carriageway varying between 7.3 and 14.6 metres (2 to 4 × 3.65 metre lanes) in the westbound direction, a central reserve with a minimum width of 3.0 metres and 2 × verges with a minimum width of 2.5 metres each.

HEADROOM

4.10 metres minimum headroom above Bridgewater Canal water level.

WATERWAY

The existing north canal bank and towpath will be retained. A new southern canal bank retaining wall is proposed to be constructed in front of the existing canal bank over a length of 299 metres and will link the new Eastern Spine Canal Bridge with the A5063 Trafford Road/White City Gyratory System West Canal Bridge.This would have the effect of reducing the minimum waterway width from 12.5 metres to 11.0 metres, except for a length of 87 metres beneath the new Eastern Spine Canal Bridge where the minimum waterway width would be further reduced to 9.5 metres.
