The City of Salford (Pomona Bridge) Scheme 1995 Confirmation Instrument 1996

The Secretary of State for Transport makes this Instrument in exercise of powers conferred by section 106(3) of the Highways Act 1980(1), and now vested in him(2), and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf:

1.  This Instrument may be cited as the City of Salford (Pomona Bridge) Scheme 1995 Confirmation Instrument 1996 and shall come into force on the date on which notice that it has been confirmed is first published in accordance with paragraph 1 of Schedule 2 to the Highways Act 1980.

2.  The City of Salford (Pomona Bridge) Scheme 1995 (“the scheme”) is hereby confirmed with modifications.

3.  The said scheme as confirmed is set out in the Schedule hereto and copies of the scheme with its accompanying plan are deposited at the offices of the Department of Transport, Great Minster House, 76 Marsham Street, London SW1P 4DR, and at the offices of the City Secretary, Salford City Council, Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton, Manchester M27 5DA.

THE SCHEDULETHE CITY OF SALFORD (POMONA BRIDGE) SCHEME 1995

THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SALFORD of Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton, Manchester M27 5DA (hereinafter called “the Council”) in agreement with Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council by virtue of Section 8 of the Highways Act 1980 make this Scheme in exercise of their powers under Section 106(3) of the said Act and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf:—

1.  The Council are authorised to construct over the navigable waters of the Manchester Ship Canal the bridge specified in the Schedule to this scheme as part of the highway known as Trafford Road which they are proposing to improve.

2.  This Scheme may be cited as the City of Salford (Pomona Bridge) Scheme 1995.

THE SCHEDULE TO THE SCHEME

PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS OF THE POMONA BRIDGE

The Location and general design of the Bridge are shown on the plan numbered 04/502/200 marked “the Trafford Road Improvement Stage 2, Pomona Bridge General Arrangement” sealed with the Common Seal of the Council of the City of Salford and deposited at the office of the City Secretary, Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton, Manchester M27 5DA and at the offices of the Secretary of State for Transport, Wellbar House, Gallowgate, Newcastle Upon Tyne NE1 4TD.

POINTS OF COMMENCEMENT AND TERMINATION

From a point at the Trafford bank of the Manchester Ship Canal 15 metres upstream (east) of the existing Trafford Road Swing Bridge, neighbouring the existing Swing Bridge, to a point adjacent to the Salford abutment of the Trafford Road Swing Bridge.

SPANS

The span over the canal is 50.9 metres skew (45.1 metres square).

The side span over the land is 31.6 metres skew (28.03 metres square).

HEADWAY

Not less than 5.227 metres above the normal water level of 21.22 metres.

WATERWAY

The existing clear navigable width remains unchanged.

OVERALL DIMENSIONS

The Bridge will be 18.750 metres wide overall and will carry 4 lanes of overall width 14 metres. A single 3 metres wide footway is provided.
