Whereas a draft of this Order has been laid before Parliament on the recommendation of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs and has been approved by a resolution of each House of Parliament:
Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in pursuance of section 2(2) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971(1), is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:
1. This Order may be cited as the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 (Modification) Order 1998 and shall come into force on 1st May 1998.
2.—(1) Schedule 2 to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971(2) (which specifies the drugs which are subject to control under that Act) shall be amended as follows.
(2) In paragraph 1(a) of Part I of that Schedule, after the word “Etoxeridine”, there shall be inserted the word “Etryptamine”.
(3) In paragraph 1(a) of Part II of that Schedule, there shall be inserted—
(a)after the word “Methaqualone”(3), the word “Methcathinone”; and
(b)after the word “Propiram”(4), the word “Zipeprol”.
(4) In paragraph 1(a) of Part III of that Schedule, there shall be inserted—
(a)after the word “Alprazolam”(5), the word “Aminorex”;
(b)after the word “Bromazepam”(5), the word “Brotizolam”; and
(c)after the word “Meprobamate”(5), the word “Mesocarb”.

This Order adds six substances to Schedule 2 to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 which specifies drugs which are subject to control under the Act. Etryptamine is added as a Class A drug; Methcathinone and Zipeprol are added as Class B drugs; and Aminorex, Brotizolam and Mesocarb are added as Class C drugs.
Schedule 2 has been amended by S.I. 1973/771, 1975/421, 1977/1243, 1979/299, 1983/765, 1984/859, 1985/1995, 1986/2230, 1989/1340, 1990/2589, 1995/1966 and 1996/1300.
“Methaqualone” was inserted by S.I. 1984/859.
“Propiram” was inserted by S.I. 1973/771.
“Alprazolam”, “Bromazepam” and “Meprobamate” were inserted by S.I. 1985/1995.
