The Rules approved by this Order amend the General Optical Council’s Rules on the Testing of Sight by Persons Training as Ophthalmic Opticians 1993. They add an additional category of persons to those exempt from section 24(1) of the Opticians Act 1989 (which makes it an offence for anyone other than a registered medical practitioner or registered ophthalmic optician to test the sight of another person). The additional category is that of persons training as ophthalmic opticians outside the United Kingdom but currently receiving instruction at a training institution approved by the General Optical Council.
