These Regulations, which are made under section 2(2) of the European Communities Act 1972, give effect to European Communities Council Directive No. 98/5/EC of 16 February 1998. The purpose of the Directive is to facilitate the practice of the profession of lawyer on a permanent basis in a member State of the European Community other than the State in which the qualification was obtained.

SCHEDULE 4EXTENSION OF ENACTMENTS IN RELATION TO THE REGISTRATION OF EUROPEAN LAWYERS WITH THE LAW SOCIETY
I112
For the purposes of section 391 of the Insolvency Act 198625 and the Insolvency Practitioners (Recognised Professional Bodies) Order 198626, registered European lawyers and their partners shall be deemed to be—
a
part of the solicitors' profession; and
b
subject to the Law Society’s rules in the practice of their profession.
