1.—(1) These Regulations may be cited as the European Parliamentary Elections (Franchise of Relevant Citizens of the Union) Regulations 2001 and shall come into force on the expiry of the period of fourteen days beginning with the day on which they are made.
(2) In these Regulations—
“the 1983 Act” means the Representation of the People Act 1983(1);
“citizen of the Union” is to be determined in accordance with Article 17.1 of the Treaty establishing the European Community(2) and “relevant citizen of the Union” means such a citizen who is not a Commonwealth citizen or citizen of the Republic of Ireland.
(3) These Regulations extend throughout the United Kingdom.
The reference to the Treaty is to it as renumbered in accordance with the Treaty of Amsterdam.
