THE SCHEDULELENGTH OF TRUNK ROAD CEASING TO BE TRUNK ROAD

The length of trunk road ceasing to be trunk road is the A361 from (and including) the roundabout at Junction 27 on the M5 motorway to (and including) Portmore Roundabout, Devon for a distance of about 55.8 m (34.7 miles), shown by broad black dashes on the plan.

AUTHORITY TO WHOM RESPONSIBILITY IS TO BE TRANSFERRED

Devon County Council, County Hall, Topsham Road, Exeter, Devon EX2 4QW.

STATEMENT OF REASONS

The A361 trunk road was identified in the 1998 White Paper “A New Deal for Transport: Better for Everyone” as a trunk road that mainly serves local and regional traffic. During the preparation of the White Paper, widespread consultation was undertaken by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions which indicated significant support for the detrunking of certain roads. The Secretary of State decided that such roads would be more appropriately managed by the local highway authorities to enable decisions to be taken locally, and to be better integrated with local transport and land use planning issues.

Agreement has been reached with Devon County Council that they will take on responsibility for the safety, maintenance and improvement of the A361 road described in the Schedule. On making this Order, the Secretary of State transfers the management of this road to Devon County Council.
