The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 80 of the Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000(1), hereby makes the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000 (Commencement No. 10) Order 2002.
2. Section 57 of the Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000(2) (testing persons in police detention) shall come into force on 2nd September 2002 within the following police areas(3):
(i)Avon and Somerset;
(ii)Greater Manchester;
(iii)Thames Valley; and
(iv)West Yorkshire.

This Order applies to England and Wales. It brings into force section 57 of the Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000 (drug testing persons in police detention) within certain police areas. The provision has already been commenced in the police areas of Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and the metropolitan police district by virtue of S.I. 2001/2232, and the police areas of Bedfordshire, Devon and Cornwall, Lancashire, Merseyside, South Yorkshire and North Wales by virtue of S.I. 2002/1149.
The following provisions of the Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000 have been brought into force by commencement order made before the date of this Order.

Section 57 has already been commenced in certain police areas by virtue of S.I. 2001/2232 and 2002/1149.
The term “police area” has the meaning ascribed to it in section 101 of the Police Act 1996 (c. 16) by virtue of Schedule 1 to the Interpretation Act 1978 (c. 30).
