A person is guilty of a corrupt practice if that person is guilty of treating.

A person is guilty of treating if they corruptly, by themselves or by any other person, at any time after notice is given under section 5 of the Act (Speaker’s notice) in relation to a petition, directly or indirectly give or provide, or pay wholly or in part the expense of giving or providing, any meat, drink, entertainment or provision to or for any person—

a

for the purpose of corruptly influencing that person or any other person to sign that petition or to refrain from doing so; or

b

on account of that person or any other person having signed the petition or refrained from doing so, or being about to sign the petition or to refrain from doing so.

Every elector or their proxy who corruptly accepts or takes any such meat, drink, entertainment or provision is also guilty of treating.
