Amendment of the Flags Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000

2.—(1) The Flags Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000(1) are amended as follows.

(2) Regulation 2 (flying of flags at government buildings on specified days) is amended as follows—

(a)in paragraph (1), at the beginning, insert “Subject to paragraph (4),”;

(b)in paragraph (2), at the beginning, insert “Subject to paragraph (4),”;

(c)after paragraph (3) insert—

(4)  The requirements under paragraphs (1) and (2) do not apply in relation to any day specified in an entry in Part 2 of the Schedule that relates to a member of the Royal Family who has died..

(3) After regulation 2 (flying of flags at government buildings on specified days) insert—

Flying of flags at government buildings on the accession of a new monarch

2A.  Following the accession of a new monarch, the Union flag shall be flown at the government buildings specified in Part 1 of the Schedule to mark the proclamation of the new monarch, on such days and at such times as are specified in formal guidance issued by Her Majesty’s Government as the days and times during which the Union flag is to be flown at all United Kingdom government buildings in England, Wales and Scotland to mark the proclamation of the new monarch..

(4) Regulation 5 (manner of flying flags required or permitted to be flown by regulations 2, 3 or 4) is amended as follows—

(a)in the heading, after “2,” insert “2A,”;

(b)in paragraph (1), after “2,” insert “2A,”.

(5) In regulation 6 (flying of flags at half mast), after “Schedule,” insert “during such times”.

(6) In regulation 7 (discretion to fly flags at government buildings), after “2(2),” insert “2A,”.

(7) In Part 2 of the Schedule (days on which the Union flag is to be flown at full mast), omit the entries for 10th June and 20th November.
