The requirements set out in the Schedule have been fulfilled.

In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by section 356(2)(a) and (b) and (4) of the Education Act 19961 and now vested in the National Assembly for Wales2, the National Assembly for Wales makes the following Order:

This Order may be cited as the Education (National Curriculum) (Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study in Music) (Wales) Order 2000 and shall come into force on 1st August 2000.

In this Order—

  • “the Authority” (“yr Awdurdod”) means the Qualifications, Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Wales3;

  • “the Document” (“y Ddogfen”) means the document published by the Authority in 2000 entitled “Music in the National Curriculum”4;

  • “the National Assembly” (“y Cynulliad Cenedlaethol”) means the National Assembly for Wales.

This Order applies only in relation to to schools in Wales.

Specification of attainment targets and programmes of study

The National Assembly directs that the provisions relating to attainment targets and programmes of study set out in the Document shall have effect for the purpose of specifying the attainment targets and programmes of study in relation to music.

  • Section 368(2)

    The Secretary of State referred a proposal to the Authority and gave directions as to the time within which the Authority were to report8.

  • Section 368(3)

    The Authority gave notice of the proposal to the bodies and persons referred to in section 368(3) of the Education Act 1996 and gave them a reasonable opportunity of submitting evidence and representations as to the issues arising.

  • Section 368(5)

    The Authority submitted its report to the National Assembly.

  • Section 368(5)

    The Authority arranged for the report to be published.

  • Section 368(6) and (7)

    A draft of the Order and of the associated document was published and a period of one month allowed for the submission of evidence and representations as to the issues arising.

The National Curriculum for Wales for Music will be revised from 1st August 2000. This Order gives legal effect to the new programmes of study, which set out what pupils should be taught, and attainment targets for them. Details of these are set out in a document called “Music in the National Curriculum” which is available from the Qualifications, Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Wales.

The Order replaces the Education (National Curriculum) (Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study in Music) (Wales) Order 1998.
