Education (Assessment Arrangements for Key Stage 3) (Amendment) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998

The Department of Education, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 7(1)(b), 2(a)(ii) and (6) of the Education Reform (Northern Ireland) Order 1989(1) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement

1.  This Order may be cited as the Education (Assessment Arrangements for Key Stage 3) (Amendment) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998 and shall come into operation on 28th January 1999.

Amendment of the Education (Assessment Arrangements for Key Stage 3) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997

2.  The Education (Assessment Arrangements for Key Stage 3) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997(2) shall be amended as provided in articles 3 to 6.

3.  In Article 4 (Interpretation) for the definition of “relevant subject” there shall be substituted the following definition—

  • “relevant subject” means—

    (a)

    subject to paragraph (b) English, Mathematics or Science;

    (b)

    in relation to a pupil who is in an Irish speaking school, Irish, English, Mathematics or Science;.

4.  In Article 5—

(a)in paragraph (1) for the words “paragraph (2)” there shall be substituted the words “paragraphs (2) and (3)”;

(b)in paragraph (2) there shall be inserted at the beginning the words “Subject to paragraph (3),”;

(c)after paragraph (2) there shall be added the following paragraph—

(3) Where a pupil is in an Irish speaking school he shall be assessed in Irish, English, Mathematics and Science at or near the end of the third key stage for the purpose of ascertaining what he has achieved in relation to the attainment targets for that key stage..

5.  In Article 8(2) after the words “English and Mathematics” there shall be added “(and, in the case of a pupil who is in an Irish speaking school, in Irish)”.

6.  For the Schedule there shall be inserted the following Schedule—

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

This Order amends the Education (Assessment Arrangements for Key Stage 3) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997.

It provides for the assessment of pupils in Key Stage 3 in Irish speaking schools in Irish as well as in English, Mathematics and Science.
