The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 17 and 26 of the Local Government Act 1992(1) and of all powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order—
1. This Order may be cited as the Local Government Changes (Rent Act Registration Areas) Order 1998 and shall come into force on 1st April 1998.
2. For the purposes of Part IV of the Rent Act 1977 (registration of rents under regulated tenancies)(2) there shall be—
(a)the Cambridgeshire registration area comprising the counties(3) of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough;
(b)the Cheshire registration area comprising the counties(4) of Cheshire, Halton and Warrington;
(c)the Devon registration area comprising the counties(5) of Devon, Plymouth and Torbay;
(d)the Essex registration area comprising the counties(6) of Essex, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock;
(e)the Hereford and Worcester registration area comprising the counties(7) of Herefordshire and Worcestershire;
(f)the Kent registration area comprising the counties(8) of Kent and the Medway Towns;
(g)the Lancashire registration area comprising the counties(9) of Blackburn, Blackpool and Lancashire;
(h)the Nottinghamshire registration area comprising the counties(10) of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire; and
(i)the Shropshire registration area comprising the counties(11) of Shropshire and The Wrekin.

This Order specifies the registration areas for the counties named in article 2 for the purposes of Part IV of the Rent Act 1977 (registration of rent under regulated tenancies). Registration areas are the organisational units for the rent officer service and rent assessment committees and each English county is a registration area except if, as in this Order, a contrary provision is made. The Order is made in consequence of the reorganisation of local government in the areas mentioned in article 2.
