The Secretary of State, in exercise of the power conferred on him by section 13(6) of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000(1), hereby makes the following Order with the consent of the Treasury:
1. This Order may be cited as the Electoral Commission (Limit on Public Awareness Expenditure) Order 2002 and shall come into force on 1st April 2002.
2. The sum of £7,500,000 is hereby specified for the purposes of section 13(6) of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 (sum which the Electoral Commission’s total expenditure incurred in any financial year in performing their functions under section 13(1) of that Act must not exceed).
3. The Electoral Commission (Limit on Public Awareness Expenditure) Order 2001(2) is hereby revoked.

Under section 13(1) of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000, the Electoral Commission are required to promote public awareness of the matters specified in that provision (which include current electoral systems and systems of local government). By this Order the power in section 13(6) of that Act is exercised in order to set a limit of £7,500,000 on the total expenditure in any year in respect of such functions. The Order also revokes the Order made in 2001 that set a limit of £1,500,000 for this purpose.
