Council Directive 93/14/EEC of 5 April 1993 on the braking of two or three-wheel motor vehicles (repealed)
When the UK left the EU, legislation.gov.uk published EU legislation that had been published by the EU up to IP completion day (31 December 2020 11.00 p.m.). On legislation.gov.uk, these items of legislation are kept up-to-date with any amendments made by the UK since then.
Legislation.gov.uk publishes the UK version. EUR-Lex publishes the EU version. The EU Exit Web Archive holds a snapshot of EUR-Lex’s version from IP completion day (31 December 2020 11.00 p.m.).
This is the original version (as it was originally adopted).
Test speed V = 60 km/h(1) for motorcycles (with or without sidecar) and tricycles.
a For mopeds with a maximum speed of 25 km/h or lower which have a wheel rim of 45 mm or less (code 1,75), this value is 2,8 or S ≤ 0,1 + V2/73. If this value cannot be achieved by each braking device because of limited adhesion, the value 4,0 m/s2 must be applied for a test on a laden vehicle using both braking devices simultaneously. | ||
b If these values for single braking devices cannot be achieved because of limited adhesion the following values shall be substituted for a test with the vehicle laden using both braking devices together: — three-wheel mopeds : 4,4 m/s2; — two-wheel motorcycles : 5,8 m/s2. | ||
Category | Stopping distance (S)(in m) | Corresponding mean developed deceleration,(in m/s2) |
---|---|---|
Two-wheel mopeds | S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/90 | 3,4a |
Three-wheel mopeds | S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/70 | 2,7b |
Two-wheel motorcycles | S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/115 | 4,4b |
Motorcycles with sidecar | S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/95 | 3,6 |

Category | Stopping distance (S)(in m) | Corresponding mean developed deceleration(in m/s2) |
---|---|---|
Two-wheel mopeds | S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/70 | 2,7 |
Three wheel mopeds | S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/70 | 2,7a |
Two-wheel motorcycles | S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/75 | 2,9a |
Motorcycles with sidecar | S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/95 | 3,6 |
S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/65
to be achieved with each of the single axle braking devices.
Test speed V = 60 km/h(2) for motorcycles (with or without sidecar and tricycles.
Category | Stopping distance (S)(in m) | Corresponding mean developed deceleration(in m/s2) |
---|---|---|
Mopeds | S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/115 | 4,4 |
Two-wheel motorcycles | S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/132 | 5,1 |
Motorcycles with sidecar | S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/140 | 5,4 |
Tricycles | S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/130 | 5,0 |
The stopping distance is:
S ≤ 0,1.V + V2/65
(corresponding mean fully developed deceleration 2,5 m/s2).
≤ 200 N
≤ 350 N (mopeds and motorcycles (with or without sidecar))
≤ 500 N (tricycles).
≤ 400 N
≤ 500 N.
Vehicles the maximum speed (Vmax) of which is lower than 45 km/h in the case of mopeds, or 67 km/h in the case of motorcycles (with or without sidecar) and tricycles are tested at a speed equal to 0,9 Vmax.
Vehicles the maximum speed (Vmax) of which is lower than 45 km/h in the case of mopeds, or 67 km/h in the case of motorcycles (with or without sidecar) must be tested at a speed equal to 0,9 Vmax.
For mopeds with a maximum speed of 25 km/h or lawer this value is 40 %.
