(1)This Act may be cited as the Social Security Act 1980 and this Act and the Social Security Acts 1975 to 1979 may be cited together as the Social Security Acts 1975 to 1980.
(2)In this Act “the principal Act” means the M1Social Security Act 1975 and “the Pensions Act” means the M2Social Security Pensions Act 1975.
(3)[F1Section 175(3) and (4) of the Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992](which among other things make provision about the extent of powers to make regulations and orders) shall apply to powers to make regulations and orders conferred by sections 8 and 20(2) of this Act and by subsection (5) of this section as extended by the said sections 8 and 20(2) as they apply to powers to make regulations and orders conferred by that Act but as if for references to that Act there were substituted references to the said sections 8 and 20(2) and the said subsection (5) as so extended.
(4)The enactments and instruments mentioned in the first and second columns of Schedule 5 to this Act are hereby repealed to the extent specified in the third column of that Schedule.
(5)The following provisions of this Act, namely, section 6 (except subsection (4)) and sections 7 to 10, 14 and 15, Part I and paragraphs 10 and 14 of Schedule 1, Schedules 2 to 4 and Part II of Schedule 5, shall come into force on such day as the Secretary of State may appoint by order made by statutory instrument, and different days may be appointed in pursuance of this subsection for different provisions of this Act; and accordingly the other provisions of this Act come into force on the passing of this Act.
(6)The following provisions only of this Act shall extend to Northern Ireland, namely—
sections 9 to 16, except sections 11, 13(6) and 15;
section 20(1) and (2) and Schedule 4 so far as they relate to the M3Polish Resettlement Act 1947 and the M4Maintenance Orders Act 1950;
this section;
Schedule 3; and
Schedule 5 so far as it relates to the M5Pensions Appeal Tribunals Act 1943, the Polish Resettlement Act 1947, the Merchant Shipping Act 1970, section 142(5) of the principal Act, the House of Commons Disqualification Act 1975, the Northern Ireland Assembly Disqualification Act 1975, section 36(2) of the Supplementary Benefits Act 1976 and Part III of Schedule 2 to the Administration of Justice Act 1977.
