1. This Order may be cited as the Dangerous Dogs (Designated Types) Order (Northern Ireland) 2024 and comes into operation on 5th July 2024.
2. The type of dog known as XL Bully is designated for the purposes of Article 25A of The Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order 1983, being a type appearing to the Department to be bred for fighting or to have the characteristics of a type bred for that purpose.
3. The appointed day for the purposes of Article 25A(3) and (4) of The Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order 1983 in respect of dogs of the type designated by Article 2 is 31 December 2024.

Article 2 of this Order designates the type of dog known as the XL Bully for the purposes of Article 25A of The Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order 1983 (“the 1983 Order”).
Article 25A(8) of the 1983 Order enables a day to be appointed after which it will be unlawful to possess a dog which has been designated for the purposes of Article 25A(1)(c), unless an exemption applies. The day appointed was specified in Article 25A(3) and (4) of the Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order 1983 as 30 November 1991. Article 3 of this Order provides that references to this date are to be read as references to 31 December 2024 in respect of dogs of the type designated by this Order.
Formerly the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD see Article 3(4) of the Departments (Northern Ireland) Order 1999 (S.I. 1999/283 (N.I. 1)). DARD was renamed the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) by section 1(2) of the Departments Act (Northern Ireland) 2016 (c.5 (N.I.)).
