Overview of the Act

  1. This Act confers the powers required to construct the first phase – "Phase One" - of a proposed new national high speed rail network, "High Speed 2" (or "HS2"). Phase One will involve the construction of new railway lines (one track in each direction) between London and the West Midlands. The terminals will be in central London (Euston) and in central Birmingham (Curzon Street) and there will be intermediate stations in West London (Old Oak Common) and at Birmingham Airport. The new lines will connect with the existing conventional railway network at Handsacre in the West Midlands.
