Territorial extent and application
- Section 54 sets out the territorial extent and application of the Media Act.
- Broadcasting and internet services policy are reserved across the United Kingdom, and "other media" including press regulation is reserved in respect of Wales. As such the Government assesses that the Media Act is reserved.
- The Media Act extends and applies to the whole United Kingdom, with the exception of section 50 in Part 7 of the Act, which extends and applies to England and Wales only (see section 61(13)(d) of the Crime and Courts Act 2013).
- In respect of Scotland and Northern Ireland, press regulation is not listed in the reservations in the Scotland Act 1998 or Northern Ireland Act 1998 respectively. Equivalent provision to Section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act 2013, an uncommenced provision which the Media Act repeals, was not made by the Scottish Parliament or Northern Ireland Assembly.
- See the table in Annex A for a summary of the position regarding territorial extent and application in the United Kingdom.
