The English Non-Metropolitan Districts (Names) Order 1973

26th March 1973

Coming into Operation

1st May 1973

The Secretary of State for the Environment, upon consideration of proposals made to him by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England and in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by paragraph 1(2) of Schedule 3 to the Local Government Act 1972 and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following order:—

Title and commencement

1.  This order may be cited as the English Non-metropolitan Districts (Names) Order 1973 and shall come into operation on 1st May 1973.

Interpretation

2.—(1) The Interpretation Act 1889 shall apply for the interpretation of this order as it applies for the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.

(2) In this order—

non-metropolitan district” means a district in a non-metropolitan county the area of which is defined by reference to the areas specified in respect thereof (by reference to administrative areas existing immediately before the passing of the Local Government Act 1972) in column (2) of the Part of the Schedule to the order of 1972 relating to the county;

reference number” in relation to any non-metropolitan district in a non-metropolitan county named in column (1) of the Schedule to this order means the reference number of the district as specified in column (1) of the Part of the Schedule to the order of 1972 relating to the county;

and in these definitions “the order of 1972” means the English dNon-metropolitan Districts (Definition) Order 1972(1).

Names of non-metropolitan districts

3.  In the non-metropolitan counties named in column (1) of the Schedule to this order each non-metropolitan district identified by its reference number in column (2) shall bear the name specified in respect of the district in column (3).
